"This universe is filled with horrible things lass, our job is to see they become less horrible as each generation passes, that I'm afraid is going to be on your fine shoulders one day." Not often the kind of person to wax lyrical, though Paddy did have his moments.

He bent to his work, eye focused on what was moving around under the microscope, although in this case he was in fact sitting back watching it on a screen. Something was annoying him though, he couldn't quite put his finger on it immediately, something he recalled from the near past. Then it hit him like a hammer right on the forehead. He swung around almost falling off his chair. "Rebecca, see what data you can bring up on a Doctor Kettarect, I don't recall his first name, but with such an unusual family name he shouldn't be too hard to find. There is something vaguely familiar about what I am seeing in this molecules in front of me."

Rebecca nodded and typed something into the computer terminal and waited as it performed the search. After a few moments the picture of a Human male who appeared to be in his mid forties appeared on the screen along with a good deal of biographical data. Rebecca read through it quickly and then looked up, "Doctor Bendes Kettaract was a quantum physicist in the twenty third century. Shortly after graduating the Academy he took a leave of absence from Starfleet and was widely rumored to have suffered from paranoia. In twenty two sixty eight he was recalled to Starfleet and was part of the scientific team which studied a Romulan cloaking device which was stolen by the crew of the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk. During this time he also began research into various ways of creating an alternative energy source. His initial research took place in the Taugan system. His biographical data and Star Fleet records after the year Twenty two sixty six have been classified and require a PSI level one security clearace to access." Rebecca let what she had said hang in the air as she stared back at Aldus.

"Interesting, I didn't really think it was that far back so it just goes to show doesn't it lass how the old mind can falter on such minor details." When she quoted the security clearance, that certainly wasn't an obstacle for him at least, being up there in the ether clouds of senior fleet officers. He left his station to move to hers, leaning over her shoulder he tapped the security key bringing up the required protocols, which naturally were activated by voice recognition. "O'Flynn, Aldus. Security number zero five delta niner eight three zero bravo six six." His voice was clear and sharp, it had to be. He recalled one time when he had a throat infection and the device kept rejecting his access.

There was certainly too long a pause before anything happened, far too long as if the system was thinking about it, or just toying with him. That wouldn't be the first for him. After what seemed like a decent three or four minutes, a message flashed across the screen Access Denied "What the?" Paddy exclaimed with annoyance, it should have worked of course unless there were some new protocols in place he wasn't aware of. "I'm sorry Lass, something seems off with this for the moment. Let me contact the Captain." he activated his comslink, given his voice a certain urgency. "Scot, I'm trying to access the Star Fleet records and though I should have PSI access, I'm being denied. Its rather urgent can you please use your override for us, we're on a timer here."

{Captain Scot Harvath}

"Doc, those files are limited to Command level access, Ships Captains and above." after a brief pause Scot continued "I have temporarily given access to your terminal. These files are for your eyes only and you can share information within them with those working with you, on a need to know basis. I will trust in your discretion."

Trust Starfleet to throw a spanner in the works at the most inopportune time, now was not the moment for upsetting the natural balance of things. Though all Aldus could do at this point was to merely shrug it off knowing a long letter to his own Chief of Staff would certainly be in the wind very soon. "Thank you Scot, that helps immensely. I'll let you know as soon as possible what we find."

Switching off his own comset for now, so as not to be disturbed, he re-accessed the files this time with the expected success. He read it through slowly, several times before getting Rebecca's attention to what he saw. "Its a little more dramatic than I felt it should be. With more time we could research it further, but alas we simply don't have the time. Look at this."

 He showed her that the research into the Omega particles was abruptly terminated when technicians started dying. Despite all their best efforts, there was simply no way back then they could find to reverse the damage done, which was quite horrific. There was though the possibility of a vaccination to protect those who may have been exposed to it; that much he could do. "I'm going to have to give the Captain the bad news shortly, but for now lets focus on the living. Those already infected we can isolate, preferably I would rather find somewhere off the ship to send them." Sad news, very sad indeed.

Rebecca stood and walked over the terminal the Doctor had been studying. When she looked at the screen she paused momentarily when she saw that the file was classified. She started to say something but then stopped herself. The Doctor wouldn't have asked her to look if it wasn't okay is what she told herself. Bending over slightly she read the file, gasping a couple of times, then blushing slightly when she realized what she had done. When she was done reading she stepped back slightly and thought about what she had read. "That is terrible. But at least it isn't contagious." she stopped as she continued to think, "Should we try and find any of the Consortium individuals that came aboard from the freighter that were in contact with this Omega particle and observe them? Maybe the victims we have were the only ones affected." The last part she said as if she were wishing it to be true.

Craning his old head sideways to better see his protege' Aldus remarked to himself just how quick a study she was, which meant in the long term there was someone to take over eventually when his time was reaching its use by date. In the short term it meant he no longer had to take all the weight himself, at his age he was needing more and more help on a monthly basis now. Sooner or later he knew that there were certain parts of his memory that were going to fail, he knew that because his own father suffered from alzheimer's when he was not much older than Paddy, a condition that even in this age if not found early was more than debilitating. "Good call lass, we'll do exactly that. Though I won't be holding my breath on the contagious aspect, as we both know from basic med school any bacteria with natural or manufactured can manifest in a variety of ways if its in the right environment. Send a message to security to make the request. I'm going to study this file a little more in depth." He paused briefly. "Oh and by the way Rebecca, you didn't see that file did you?" His wink was as always rather mischievous.

Rebecca nodded and moved over to another terminal and sent a message to security instructing them to separate any prisoners  which may have been from the Consortium research station. Once that was done she looked back over to the doctor and thought for a moment before answering him, "What file?" she responded as she grinned slightly.

{ Captain Scot Harvath }

"Bridge to Doctor O'Flynn. Doc I hate to say this but I am going to need you to get ready for possible incoming wounded, injuries unknown. We are en route to answer a distress signal. Nature of the emergency is unknown as of now. I will also need you to prepare a medical team to standby to escort a landing party should the need arise."

"You're catching on fast lass, before you know it you'll be taking--" He didn't finish what he was about to say, something Rebecca could figure out for herself. Scot's voice alarmed the old man into swift action. Another day at the office so to speak.

Getting out his chair, arching his back some he tapped his assistant on the shoulder lightly. "That means the both of us, we can leave the other staff to do whatever is needed here." He then replied to the bridge. "You mean Scot we're venturing into the unknown once again? Rebecca and I will be there in five, ready to go."

"Grab two emergency kits Rebecca, oh and just for the sake of it take a phaser with you." Paddy started getting himself ready at that point, which was nothing more than taking a few deep breaths and steadying his mind for whatever might come.

"Hasty?" He mumbled to himself, picked up his ready bag and slung it over his shoulder. "Ready lass?" He queried his medic, damned if he wasn't going to force her promotion sooner rather than later. Once again he tapped his comset.
"We're on our way Scot, keep your shorts on lad, you're dealing with a geriatric here." That should shut him up for a while.
